About Erik Visser
  • I have been a “computer geek” from the day the first Sinclair Spectrum appeared on the market (for more info about my computers, click here).
  • I received my degree in mechanical engineering at the University of Groningen, the Netherlands. I moved to Canada in 1995.
  • I worked as an engineer for 15 years.
  • Within the companies I worked for, both in the Netherlands and in Canada, I was active graphic designer of brochures, logos, newsletters and more.
  • After hours I worked as an artist, graphic designer and web designer for several companies.
  • I decided to become a full time artist and web designer in 2004.
  • I feel lucky to have lived and work on two continents. My influences have therefor been many. I was born and raised in the Netherlands and now have lived in Canada since 1995.
I consider myself very privileged that I did get my university degree in Mechanical Engineering and that I worked with several different companies in a variety of different functions. I learned so much from it!
Summerize

In my education I learned, among many things:

  • Technical drawing
  • Analytical thinking
  • Creative thinking
  • Programming and software develloping
  • Marketing
  • Welding (Yes: I am a hands-on man as well)

Within the companies I was, among many things:

  • Designer-draftsman
  • Programmer and software developer
  • Estimator
  • Graphic designer
  • Technical Sales Representative
  • Manager

All of these skills come in very handy as a web designer!

In My Spare Time

In my spare time I enjoy:

  • Computers; browsing for web design stuff, photography, new programs, new developments. I guess you can say that everything "computer" is both a hobby and a profession!
  • Art, painting. Music; all kinds, but especially music from the baroque period.
  • My carbon fibre cello. Josephine taught me for years. I am a member of the Edmonton Philharmonic Orchestra since 2003 and I play in a cello ensemble.
  • Going to concerts, art galleries, walks.
  • Hiking and camping in the Canadian Rockies. Josephine and I hike about 20 km a day whenever we visit the Rockies.
  • Photography. I love my Canon DSLR.
  • Nature and the environment. I try to minimize my footprint on this earth.
  • The fire place with a good glass of wine and good company.
Conclusion

My engineering background gives my web sites precision, usability and detail; my artist background gives it flair, style, creativity and personality, and my graphic design background makes it eye-catching and easy to navigate.
